The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, recently emphasized the limits of his authority in determining Nigeria's diplomatic relations with other nations. Wike clarified that the exclusive power to make such decisions resides with the President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Tinubu.

During a meeting with the leadership of the Abuja National Mosque Management Board, Wike provided essential clarifications regarding his October 3, 2023 encounter with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria. He vehemently refuted baseless and untrue allegations suggesting that he expressed support for Israel over Palestine.

Wike, in no uncertain terms, stated, "I have heard from various social media platforms that we had a meeting that we are doing this and that with Israel. I am here acting on the delegation of powers on behalf of Mr. President. I cannot determine a relationship between a country and another country. So, it is difficult for anybody to say 'I am doing this, I am doing that'."

He continued to explain the protocol for engaging with foreign entities, emphasizing that any foreign body wishing to engage with Nigeria must coordinate through the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Minister's role is to facilitate discussions and partnerships to benefit Nigeria, whether in agriculture or other sectors.

Wike further elucidated that his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador had a singular purpose – to explore an agricultural partnership that would serve the interests of farmers in the Federal Capital Territory.

"In Abuja here, most of them have cultural farms, and we say, 'Look, it is our desire to help anybody who wants to invest in Abuja, particularly in agriculture, to employ our people and to get more revenue. It has nothing to do with another country. It doesn't work that way," Wike emphasized.

This statement underscores that the primary objective was not to form international alliances but to bolster the local agricultural sector.

Wike also called for a broader perspective among the public, noting that misunderstandings could arise when people view such initiatives through a narrow lens. He stressed the importance of fostering harmonious relations and unity to promote development within the nation.

The visit of the Israeli Ambassador, Michael Freeman, took place on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, just before the eruption of conflict between Hamas militants and Israel. Despite the timing, some clerics had accused Wike of offering Nigeria's support to Israel in the context of the conflict.

During the visit, Ambassador Freeman expressed Israel's willingness to collaborate with Nigeria to create employment opportunities for the unemployed population, transform Abuja into a technology hub, and engage in agricultural partnerships.

In response, Wike conveyed Nigeria's commitment to partnering with Israel in the field of Information Technology, with a visionary plan to establish a Technology Village in Abuja. This forward-thinking initiative aimed to leverage Israel's expertise in technology and innovation.

Wike also highlighted Abuja's favorable climate and proposed a joint effort to create a large technology-driven farm that could provide employment for many young people. The focus here was on economic development and technological advancement.
