Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has unequivocally opposed the upcoming March elections, stressing the country's critical defense needs in the wake of Russia's extensive invasion. Zelenskyy, on November 6, firmly rejected the notion of conducting elections, citing the imprudence of such actions during wartime. His focus remains on consolidating unity and ensuring unwavering support for the country's Armed Forces.
With Russia's full-scale invasion last February, Zelenskyy implemented martial law, effectively prohibiting any electoral processes. He maintains that the ongoing war situation makes the democratic process a complicating factor. The scheduled elections, originally planned for March 2024, now stand suspended amid the pressing concerns of conflict and defense.
"In times of war, introducing the topic of elections into society in a casual manner is utterly irresponsible given the numerous challenges we face," stated Zelenskyy, highlighting the gravity of the current situation in Ukraine.
Following recent attacks by Russia using Iranian-manufactured Shahed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) on the Kherson, Donetsk, and Kharkiv regions, the President emphasized the paramount importance of addressing the nation's pressing needs.
